The proposed design of the Buddhist Zen Temple is situated on IJburg in Amsterdam. Besides the temple, the design includes a living space and office. Daylight plays an important role in the perception of the building, but here it must be used in combination with privacy. Sky lights allow for an atmosphere of introspection and private thought while still letting daylight in. The Zen Zang Center makes use of intermediary spaces to indirectly connect the inner and outer world. The temple space receives daylight from six directions. The Buddha on the north side is lit from above and behind by the intermediary space, as well as from below by means of reflected light from the water that streams underneath.
