Schiphol International Airport is seeking a solution for the heavy noise produced by airplanes on the ‘Polderbaan.’
Aside from effecively absorbing noise, the winning entry should also be an innovative and lasting icon. Through a durable and noise-reducing design combined with optimal form, function, and technique it is possible to create an image representative of the Netherlands.
The noise nuisance is taken care of at the source. When necessary, a screen rises up from out of the landscape beside the runway. This screen functions by means of reflection, absorption, and extinquishing soundwaves, and is designed as a pneumatic system with artificial membranes. The outer membrane has double-walled ribs through which runs water. By including a circular course of air, water, and energy the consumption is limited. The landscape of various forms takes care of dispersing and diminishing the sound waves. Included in the project area is an algae cultivation and research institute. These mebranes, with steel aids construction form the last barrier for blocking noise. Windmills produce the energy required to operate the screen.
