The Netherlands is expected to have a major growth of its senior population in the coming years. We’ve always remained active in the field of senior housing at TEKTON, with projects such as the Willem Dreeshuis and the Hofkamers.
The recently designed Willem Dreeshuis in Oostpoort will soon begin construction. It is an example of integrating multiple senior housing types with care facilities. Together with Habion and Amstelring organization we developed a housing typology designed for the needs and concerns of seniors but also fit for the future easily adaptable for other age groups. It has met and exceeded the standards put forth by the Dutch quality label Woonkeur.
Our design gives extra attention to the size of rooms as well as the width of circulation spaces and doorways. We payed careful attention to the public areas to give people the opportunity to meet like entrances, circulation space and common living rooms. The interaction of the appartments with streets and courtyard were of concern in the lay-out because when people’s mobility lessens the passive contact with outside becomes more important.
Both the Willem Dreeshuis and the Hofkamer are designed with independence in mind. The inhabitants have the freedom to decide their own level of care based on their personal needs and abilities. At the Hofkamer their is a strong relationship between public, collective, and private spaces. It is formed by the thematical zoning of protected inner courtyards connected with pleasant streets.
The urban plan consists out of composition of U-shaped volumes orientated towards each other. The enclosed protected outside space, designed as thematically courtyards are connected through streets. A strong relation between public — collective and private space is formed through zonings. Each courtyard is characterized by living and or a mix-use of care facilities and living. By omission of one of the volumes a central square for the neighborhood forms the hart of the scheme. The scheme is designed with sustainable principles, such as social environment, consciousness of energy, flexibility and a firm structure.
