The pro­posed design of the Bud­dhist Zen Tem­ple is sit­u­ated on IJburg in Ams­ter­dam. Besides the tem­ple, the design includes a liv­ing space and office. Day­light plays an impor­tant role in the per­cep­tion of the build­ing, but here it must be used in com­bi­na­tion with pri­vacy. Sky lights allow for an atmos­phere of intro­spec­tion and pri­vate thought while still let­ting day­light in. The Zen Zang Cen­ter makes use of inter­me­di­ary spaces to indi­rectly con­nect the inner and outer world. The tem­ple space receives day­light from six direc­tions. The Bud­dha on the north side is lit from above and behind by the inter­me­di­ary space, as well as from below by means of reflected light from the water that streams underneath.
